I have a 2005 ford escape. How much is a normal cost for the all wheel drive to be replaced or repaired?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It has been disengaged for almost 8 months
and now I'm being told it's going to be $900
to fix.

Disabled is probably the better word. It kept malfunctioning so I took it to the shop 8 months ago and they said I really didn't need it so they disabled it. I have since taken it to another shop and they said it would be $900 to repair because their is metal in the fluid??? The is all foreign to me.

Is it even normal to disable the AWD. The shop I took it to said it shouldn't have been disabled in the first place.
