Why does the battery light come on dashboard?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just got the water pump and ignition switch
replaced on my 09 Mercury Mariner. After picking it
up from the shop, while i was driving, the battery
light came on and it almost felt like the steering
wheel was locking or it was difficult to steer. The
battery light only lights up when i come to a stop.
Disappears as i drive. Is this a bad battery? or
alternator? I'm calling my mechanic tomorrow to let
him know.

I went to autozone this morning to test both the battery and alternator. the worker told me they both came back positive and he's sure its neither of those. But now as the battery light comes on when it wants, the steering wheel begins to lock or much more strength needed to turn. I brought it to my mechanic, test drove it so he can see. expecting an update shortly. He believes it might be the alternator. Which I pray its not.
