Tiguan reliability

Asked by LCP Nov 08, 2011 at 11:32 PM about the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan SE

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I really want one...I have been looking at an '09 SE 4motion, but  have read various  negative
consumer "reviews" about mold problems and constant breakdowns.  Consumer Reports
gave it a generally favorable review, but gave it an average reliability score. JD Power claims
its reliability is mediocre, and the maniacal griping by VW fanboys on some forums is
impossible to trust...soooo...any thoughts?

Having just got rid of ours, an 09 SE, for a much better vehicle in the Mini Countryman S. Mechanically, the vehicle was getting traditional VW plastic faults and fails, but the clunking tranny and lousy fuel economy were the biggest reasons. That and the lack of a proper manual tranny and clutch. The R line is what we wanted and would have picked up a gray market one in Canada. I am very glad that we did not. Bottom line, if you want 4 wheel drive, get a Mini Countryman All 4. You and you wallet will be glad that you did.

I've had my Tiguan since 2009, bought it new. Never had one problem with it until over 3 years later (2 weeks ago). Something happened with mis firing or something like that and they did work on the manifold. Even though my 3 yr 36,000 mile warranty was expired they did the job for free because its covered under "engine-exhaust" warranty. Only 1 issue ever. I love my Tiguan! Only selling it cause I cannot afford the payments anymore.

I What should I expect on Tiguan? What mileage is an average for “no problems”?
