Synthetic or Conventional Oil?

The conventional wisdom is that going to synthetic on a high mile car could cause problems with dirt in the engine being cleaned out by the higher levels of detergents in the synthetic oil and possibly harming the engine. If you changed your oil every 3,000 miles and the inside of your engine is pretty clean I don't see any harm in it. I would use a top grade filter and change the oil at 3,000 miles the first time you run synthetic though. Every 5,000 miles after that.
Full_of_Regrets, my mechanic would not agree with you about switching to synthetic oil, you can do this anytime, and, it's always advisable to keep up with regular oil changes.
The biggest benefit of synthetic oil is that it can withstand much higher temperatures without breaking down, giving lubrication to the whole system. At least, that's what I've been told.
Old proverb: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Use it!!!! Geez it's not rocket science. 5k max changes. 7k max. I have gone 8k on my Audi with 230k miles on it. Still fairly clean. I dont burn or leak a drop of oil.
