2009 V6 TOUAREG TDI STRONG FUEL OR EXHAUST SMELL

Asked by VictoryBkrGrl Apr 27, 2020 at 08:48 PM about the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V6 TDI

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Several months ago had over whelming fuel smell in cabin. repair shop
diagnosed & replaced oil pressure switch, leaking fuel injectors & seals,
cabin air filter & cleaned as much of fuel from engine surface as possible.
Smell abated some then returned. Repair shop says no leaks after
performing a smoke test which revealed only very minor exhaust leak
towards back of vehicle. They said it would not cause the smell. Car runs
perfect with no other issues. Keeping heater fan set to recirculate vs drawing
in outside air helps keep smell out of cabin, but still strong outside after
driving long enough to warm engine up.

Any chance it could be an exhaust leak in the turbo waste gate? I checked the mechanics notes & saw that they found a leak here but stated it was a very mild leak & possibly not the cause of the fume smell.
