I have a 2009 Xterra and the heater fan won't work when it is very cold out (10 deg or colder). Any idea what the problem is?

Recently we've had very cold weather in PA. The last two mornings when it was 10 deg or less the heater fan wouldn't work. The first morning it began working after I drove for about an hour. The second day I pulled it into my garage, put an electric heater in the car and after about 20 mins the fan started to work again. Now today after work it didn't work on the way home (6 deg outside)

I had the same problem last week in ohio. It was about 15 degrees out and was working one minute and then quit the next???
