back up camera only works when hatch back is open

Asked by Guru1VF5X Aug 31, 2019 at 03:11 PM about the 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2009 Subaru Impreza, 100,000 miles.  Back up camera stopped working.  Upon
further investigation the camera actually does work but only when the hatch
back is in the fully up position.  1/3 of the way down the camera stops working. I
checked the reverse bulbs and the wire that is spliced into the bulb from the
camera power wire.  Both seem fine.  Any ideas?

Hatch? If so it's probably the harness entering the hatch through the roof, where stretching when closed relies in intermittence from a torn wire in the harness that momentarily reconnects when slack is provided when you lift the hatch. Or maybe the camera is filled with water? Regardless, remove the rubber and tape and check all those small wires a few inches up into the roof to check for broken wires. PITA.
