Did you look at the new lift support component, if there a spring clip? If so, maybe you can use a flat bladed tool to loosen the clip on the old lift support. Of course, I can't see anything from here? With the new lift support, line it up and pop it with palm of hand, it should snap into place because of the spring clip. Some lift supports, that's how they work. If the component isn't what I think it is, my bad.
