Timing marks

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok, long and short of it. I have a broken
balance shaft in a 2.0tsi, getting ready to
pull it and replace. Question is, cams and
crank TDC marks line up on the main drive
chain. Since I'm pulling the balance shafts
out and replacing do the timing marks
matter at this point on the balance shafts
and idler gear on the intermediate chain.
Or can I align all the marks up once the
shafts are replaced as long as crank and
cams are still at TDC?
Thanks in advance!!!

I would try to find a service manual or a do it yourself manual. Anytime you mess with overhead camshafts and valves that can hit pistons it is a good idea to have some sort of informed information handy. On some engines a simple misstep can cost big bucks.

Thank you sir, I have a few manuals but none really say what to do if replacing the balance shafts. All other timing marks are lined up to top dead center as far as the crank and cams are concerned. Just not sure about the shafts. Or if it's imperative all line up before you start to disassemble everything.

The balance shaft chain has three marks on it and each sprocket has a Mark I just line them all up I've done many this way
