Do Cobalt transmissions all suck??!

Asked by jeff_cobalt_2010_bre... Dec 18, 2020 at 05:52 PM about the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt 2LT Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2010 Cobalt and the transmission just died, the car drives in forward
bt not in reverse, I have never seen this before. I had it serviced yesterday
for an oil lube and filter and later that afternoon, the transmission is
broken/needs to be rebuilt i am told. Before the breakdown yesterday, i drove
it on the highway and the RPMs hit 5500, the last time that happened to me,
my car also needed major repair work. This car had only 74,000Kms on it
and now it needs $2500 in repairs to rebuild the transmission. I doubt it is
worth it

Cobalt's were Chevy's cheap transportation vehicles. They are not known for longevity or reliability. For a trans to fail at that mileage is not normal, but anything can happen. Seems you had an internal failure. If you really like the vehicle and want to drive it a few more years, a repair might make sense. Not doing anything, you will get scrap value for the vehicle. No one wants a vehicle without a working trans. The car is worth around $3000 to 3500 if you sell it once fixed. I would have a mechanic source a used transmission to get you back on the road. Maybe cost you around $1500 all said and done?
