What would make a 2010 Chevy HHR ls with a 2.2 L in it chug if it was unplugged?

Old/worn spark plugs or weak ignition coil(s) would be the first suspects on my list especially if the engine smooths out as you pick up speed and ease off the accelerator. Even if your check engine light is off it would be wise to have it scanned for free at a local auto parts store in case the codes are "pending" or the bulb is burnt out. When replacing spark plugs always use factory original brand/part number listed in your owners manual regardless of make or model unless you've done extensive modifications to the engine

Not sure if code scan will pick up timing belt issue, but definitely would have engine scan for codes first
