I would leave it as it is. The only benefit will be a very slight increase in horsepower at moderately to wide open throttle. I doubt that you would even notice this increase. Also in the few times that I have tried air intake modifications to get an increase in fuel mileage, I have found that my wallet got thinner and the fuel mileage stayed the same. Also oiled filters such as K&N and similar can cause mass air flow sensor issues if over oiled. These filters are very easy to over oil.

on modern automobiles simply fitting a performance air filter will actually decrease the motor output power, because the sensors will notice "too much" air going through and the ECU will adjust the motor controls to suit, if you are up-rating the air filter or other similar work then a specialist will have to adjust the ECU to get the power you want out of it

Thank you so much for the feed back. There are so many units I have looked at and it seems like Simota and CorkSpor are best suited for Mazda regarding the Short Ram air intake. But I did find a Jet unit that uses a OEM MAF housing and allegedly aligns with the stock computer/ ECM?. I run pretty full on throttle on my run. Avg cruise speeds exceeds 65...if you know what I mean . So I suppose my area is quick passing and higher rates of speed. If the JET and either intake prove a solution? To give me the fantastic Mazda longevity as my other Mazdas (146K MX-6 and 198600+ strong and counting) Am I on the right track ? I haven't purchased either item as yet. Thank you again for your experience and feedback.
