2010 Jetta TDI radio issues

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I've been reading Judge_Roys comments about VW's radio problems. I've ask the dealer about installing an aftermarket radio but the dealer tells me that my smog will not work. (Cannot register next year). Is that true or is he trying to scare me to get the business. I'm out to check the ground issue now.

Actually, the factory radio DOES go through the diagnostic system of your Jetta. Installing an aftermarket radio could very well leave an open circuit that would keep the state inspection equipment from completing their task. I'd stay with a factory radio but there may be a suitable model that is less problematic.
The radio is not going to set an emissions code unless it recieves speed information for speed related volume control and then the radio then passes that information along to the ECM. If you replace the radio and the speedometer doesn't work... that's an issue. If not, it isn't an issue.
