How often are fuel filters replaced on a vehicle?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Just recently after filling up the gas take on my car, the Fuel Filter Maintenance light illuminated shortly afterwards. I checked my owners manual, and it said that it was a maintenance-free item. On my previous car I never had the filter changed, and I had that car for 11 years. Is this an easy DIY thing, or is it better to have an auto shop/dealership replace this?

The fuel filter is non-serviceable because it's built in with pump.Inside gas tank. After looking at some threads, the enthusiasts say it could be the pump it's self, but a 2010 is awfully new for a pump to fail, but could happen. Possibly the gas tank got something in it-- some contaminates --also. This will size up to see.
Do you have a habit of driving with a very low amount of gas? Just conjecture here ..if you do the gas is what cools the pump. And it's only DIY if you are moderately experienced with these things, no need to be an expert mechanic, but do need a decent tool set do not use dealer, that will be double triple fourple the cost

Thank you for your responses. I would really hate if it is the fuel pump, can't imagine that it would go out so soon. I usually fill up when I get down to 1/4 tank, never getting below that. My mom told me as a youngster to never let my tank get below 1/4 full, and I've stuck with that since then. I would never attempt to do this myself, but I have brothers who are pretty good with cars and have done some major work on cars with no issues. Hope I haven't gotten ahold of some bad gas!
ok- you better get a pro to do this- just breathing the gas is carcinogenic- and all you know at this point is that a little light came on- sure would be silly to do all that work if only the light is malfunctioning- and I LOVE those "maintenance free" items- if that's the case, why have a warning light- the strange world of cars-
