has anyone had a problem with the engine control module on a Sonata Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata LTD. three weeks ago I tried to start my car
and it would not start. The lights on the dash board came on but when I
pushed the start button everything we went off. I could not turn the steering
wheel or put the car into another gear. I brought it to a dealership and they
said my battery and starter needed to be replaced. I paid them $695 to
replace a starter ( i am a girl so of course it cost more) and I replaced the
battery. Everything was fine for about 5 days than I noticed a change in the
way the car drove. I would put my foot on the excelerater and the RPM"s
would go up but the increase in speed would lag or not go up at all. Now the
car is not starting again. The lights go on but when I push the start button
everything shuts down. Can this be the ECU (or Powertrain control
module)?

I would have the alternator load tested. Check the battery terminal wires & terminals for being tight and corrosion free with good connections at each end. Not know the cost of the starter at the dealership off hand I would still think you paid dearly for it.

I’m going through this now. EXACT same scenario, same car. It wouldn’t start one day. Replaced the battery and starter. Seemed fine for a day. Engine light came on. Mechanic who did repairs looked at it and advised to take to Hyundai Dealership. Next day on the way, there was a pop from the engine, knocking, lost all acceleration power. I was going 70 mph on I-40 at the time, in the center lane, in rush hour traffic. Barely made it to the shoulder without getting mowed down by cars and big rigs flying around me. Nevermind the hazard lights that were immediate turned on. 30 minutes later, power is restored. A friend calls and tells me about an engine recall that is subsequently verified through Hyundai’s website by entering my VIN. My car is affected. But the dealer wants $1330 for a new ECM because it passed their “audible inspection.” Another mechanic and another dealership says bs. The engine needs to be replaced. Even with a new ECM, it’s still at risk for engine failure again in the future and a full replacement includes what? A whole new ECM. Curious to know how your situation played out. I, too, am a woman with a 2011 Sonata Limited Edition and feel these are classic intimidation tactics. There’s a whole class action lawsuit about it for those who paid for the repairs. HUGE settlement. Was there any final resolution for you?

We are having the same issue. Has anyone had an update or resolution? Very curious. Thank you.
My 2015 sonata has been aat the dealer for repair for 48 days. Never heard of such a thing. This was for a battery, same as some of the other complalints, a battery always, but ends up ecm or something. . I wish the thing called hyundai corp. makers would do some studies on building cars that work.Joy
I have a 2012 hybrid sonata and the engine seized. Hyundai recalled half a million 2.0 liter engines and replaced no charge. Mine seized the dealer didn’t say anything I looked on the website found out about the recall (fuel injected only engines) I asked for a warranty claim to be submitted next day Hyundai requested tech to dig deep into engine and find out why. There was metal shavings and 7 months later they replaced engine and tranny(goodwill is was slipping) NOW no power leaving hybrids battery. Replaced the Power relay, HPCU Module and tomorrow I find out what the conflict is with the power not getting to the HPCU module. Feb-Nov. no car

I am having the same issue with my car now. I heard about the recalls and took it to the hyundai dealership. They fixed all recalls and had to give me a new engine cause it failed the sound test. Two days after leaving the dealership it died on me while at a stop light. Ever since then its been lagging at times and I can feel the differential in the speed and rpms while im driving. When I stop at a light it will sputter like it wants to die and then sometimes it does. Took it to dealership but they have not figured out what it is yet. Anyone else found out the issue?

I think I may be having a similar issue. My car was fine, no issues. Then I took it in for regular service and they told me there was a recall. I took it back the following week and they completed the warranty work. Now a few weeks later my car acted a little unusual and the engine light is on. UGH
Caballero_44634, I had the same exact problems one after the other. Put in money for a new battery, new battery fuse, new starter, and about 4 days later my car suddenly shut off completely on me as I was driving. So after having 2-3 different mechanics check it out, turns out it was my FUEL PUMP that needed to be replaced. Random, so Everytime I tried starting my car, it wasn't like the starter sound this time... It actually sounded like I was completely out of gas... Jump but no crank. The new issue that followed after all the other issues already dealt with .... Is my airbag light stays on now, and my gears won't switch unless I do it manually with my key inserted in the shift lock release. I'm over Hyundai's
