2011 Hyundai Sonata timing belt service

Asked by GuruYSDV2 Mar 10, 2018 at 10:26 AM about the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was having my 2011 Hyundai Sonata
steering wheel shaft fixed (no longer
covered under the 100,000 warranty); the
dealer tells me the timing belt needs to be
replaced.  I told the dealer that I was told
this was a chain and would never need to
be replaced?  They said the engine belt is
a chain; the timing belt is not.  They were
going to charge me over $500 for this and
to replace spark plugs. I’m taking it to
another garage to see what they say.
There is no noise coming from the timing
belt.  I saw on this website that in fact my
car a has a timing chain and not a belt. I’m
never buying a Hyundai again. There have
been about ten recalls for this car. I’ve
wasted more time and money on this car
than any other car I’ve owned. You get
what you pay for.  I next time I’m buying a
Toyota or Honda!

Have two Hyundai Sonatas yes recalls o' plenty but mostly mundane issues. At least Hyundai doesn't cover up issues and they let you know. No charge for that stuff. Took a chance on these cars, but have had no issues except for the starter going on one at 80k miles. Not that unexpected. To each his own but both mine Hyundai's have been extremely dependable and cheap to operate. Gas mileage also excellent on long trips pulling about 36 mpg. So far so good.

I have owned my Sonata for almost 8 years now. Yes there have been a number of recalls. In spite of that this has been the best car buying experience I have ever had in the 45 years I have been buying cars. I've had a few other issues but Hyundai has taken care of me better than any other manufacturer. They have always provided me with a free rental car it the repair will take a while or lately they Uber back and forth from the dealership at their expense. Prior to Hyundai I drove Toyota cars for 20 years and Toyota never did anything like that. At that time my Sonata was about $4000 less than a comparability equipped Camry and the warranty was 10 years, 1000,000 miles vs 5 years 60000 miles for the Camry. I am very satisfied with Hyundai and I have never looked back. The people who tell you not to but Hyundai are probably Ford owners. What a joke. If Ford offered the same warranty a Hyundai they would end up out of business after several years.
