What would cause this?

I had a tune up done in January. A valve cover
gasket was also replaced. Yesterday the check
engine light came on after I turned my traction
control off and back on. I took the car back to the
place that did the tune up and the mechanic said
that the thing in the picture was cracked and two of
the four coil things weren’t working properly.
What would cause this to crack and wouldn’t it
have been noticed that those pieces weren’t
working during the tuneup?

Are you trying to say the mechanic cracked it? Parts gets old, and get brittle due to heat. No one can check everything these days with how busy they are. I'd just have it replaced and if you don't like the charge, find another shop next time if you are unhappy.

I understand parts get old and wear but when you pay for the very thing that’s happened not to happen one kinda gets concerned with the work provided. And if it’s still heating to the point that something like this could happen, I’d need to know what is causing it so I can get it properly taken care of. Since I don’t know anything really about cars, I figured I’d look for answers outside of the ones I’ve already gotten. Thanks for your answer though.
