I spilt oil everywere; is my car safe?

Asked by Jackson Jul 16, 2018 at 09:51 PM about the 2011 BMW 3 Series 328i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Well I tried to change my own oil, but forgot to tighten down the oil filter cap before starting my car. Oil spewed everywhere in the engine (battery is ok, it's in the trunk) and on the ground. I used kitty litter to soak up the oil on the ground, but what do I do about the oil in the engine bay? Is it ok? Or should I use something to clean it off before running the car again?

After cleaning them best you can by hand, cover all electronics by using plastic bags (sandwich bags work well) then use engine degreaser as directed on the can. Not only should all the oil be gone but the rest of the motor will be cleaner too! I would NOT use a pressure washer to wash or rinse after degreasing
