2.8 liter and 3.5 liter straight six's one has a little more get up and tork than the other and that would be the 335i,I have had several of these and the straight six is the one bullet proof thing I know BMW is proud of- The first turbocharged petrol 3-series was the E92 or the 335i, but The 335i model (e90) 2002-2011 was notoriously known for it's faulty high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) which many owners had to replace due to failure. The problem was so large and BMW got so many complaints that they decided to actually do a recall on 335i models so that they could replace the HPFP. Although this was one main issue faced by this generation, many would argue that reliability on the 5th generation was by far the best out of previous models
I agree with Paulygray69. I had the high-pressure fuel pump replaced free on my 2007 335i under the recall in 2010 even though it was not having any issues at the time. Since then, the only repair I've seen through 46k miles other than maintenance was the DMTL (diagnostic module-tank leakage). Did that one myself -- an hour job once it's diagnosed. The 335i is much more powerful. In fact, Car and Driver says it really has more power than the listed 300 hp/300 lb/ft of torque. Useful when passing; I'm not a stoplight racer myself.
