Worth the money to bring back to life?

Asked by Cossy Aug 27, 2015 at 07:42 PM about the 1977 BMW 3 Series 320i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Anyone know if i would be able to recoup my cost if i bring the old 1977 BMW 3-
Series 320i back to life? Been sitting at my parents farm since i was living abroad
for the last 16 years. Was tiptop on my departure, but now it needs plenty of
love, which equals $$$ eg rust, paint, engine seals. Any idea ?

This is a very personal decision. First, recoup your cost? No.Not gonna happen. If it has been sitting for 16 years. Who knows what it will need? Totally unpredictable. But if you have the money, and the sentimental value is worth it, go got it. But again, no matter what you spend it's yours, value to others be danged. I had a similar situation years ago, with a 1972 Mercury Cougar. Spent more than it was worth to 'restore'.... which turned out not to be a restoration at all, just get it running and paint. Then I slapped myself on the head... what was I thinking? Now I have a car worth $1000 (maybe) that I spent $2000 to re-furbish.

There's NO way in the world that I would invest the kind of hard core dollars it would take to try to restore a 16 year old BMW that literally has been sitting for that length of time. The ROI (Return on Investment) won't be there, BUT if it has some sentimental value and you've got cash to burn, go for it..I guess.
