burnt engine wiring harness

recently bought 86' 325es that has wiring harness insulation burnt away.all wiring from firewall to sensors and the like are bare copper.car was running at the time of the incident. what could cause short that didn't pop the fuses

Could be that the fuse(s) burned out before so they were replaced with higher rated fuses that didn't burn out before the wiring was destroyed.

thanks for input Jonathan i'll take a look see. I was thinking someone may have installed the battery backward. the batt. was not in the car when I bought it.the info on car running at time of incident was second hand
