Car shakes
Asked by VivBarr Jul 25, 2017 at 06:59 AM about the 2006 Cadillac CTS 3.6L RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
So I have a Cadillac CTS and the steering wheel
shakes whenever it goes above 20mph I took it to
the dealer and first they said it needed tire balance,
so went back to get that and then they said that it
didn't need that it needed new bearings (400) and
new wheels, but even getting that done they still
wouldn't be sure the shaking would stop. Sounds
like bs to me.. anyone know?? Thanks.

Me personally the dealer would be the last place I take a car , it's unfortunate that people can't be trusted , with the wheel in the air you can grab the wheel and see if there's any play in it , up ,down , side to side , there shouldn't be any , if there is you'd have to find the problem , if there's not I would start with balancing the wheels , Did this happen out of the blue ? If it's that bad it doesn't sound safe to drive . Any shop would suggest more than one component plus an alignment .
Thank you for replying, I don't know how long the issue has been going on for because I bought the car used I have a month now and whenever it's at 20mph and over it starts to shake. Funny thing is I bumped into the mechanic at the dealer and he told me it was rotation issue and they gave me a paper stating that but when I went in for it they told me they had to diagnose it again and then 2hrs later told me it was a bearing issue that would cost be 500$ and the fact that he didn't know whether me paying that would fix the issue really upset me. So I'm going to take your advice and go somewhere else and get the rotation done hopefully that's the issue. Also I just noticed none of the tires are the same brand and two in the front are different sizes and two in back are different as well. Thanks again.

I think you have VERY loose tie rod ends or other front end component , the front tires should match and if they are in decent condition , without humps or uneven tread wear , they shouldn't cause vibration like that , if it was like that from the day you bought it then the seller may be liable under lemon laws , see if there's like an angies list or something to find a garage that won't rob you .
