Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 2006 cadillac dts. The car doesn't
start. It cranks and back fires almost
starts. By it back firing I'll assume there's
spark and fuel. I tried using starting fluid
it doesn't help. I found rotted wires at the
cam sensor. I'm replacing both the cam
sensor and cam sensor harness. It look
like all three wires at one point  came
together and then split up into three going
back into the connector  I'm not sure if the
wires melted like that or that's the way the
car came out of the factory There are no
codes. I bought this car not running. I
haven't checked the compression yet. Do
you think it could be a timing chain? The
car has over 200,000 miles. I don't know
the cars history. Your help would be
greatly appreciated.

if you do a leak down test that would be better then you could tell if it's the timing chain/belt if things don't make sense or if valves open up at the wrong times . Any thing is possible buying it as is .

A leak down test would only tell you if there's a faulty "valves/rings cracked head or leaky gasket" ie. (compression).none of which cause backfiring. Am I wrong?

either one will do I guess , corroded sensor wires sounds like anything could be wrong , not that you've made a bad investment , if the motors bad and you're willing to do what it takes you'll have a nice ride , these rides cost $$ no matter how you look at it .Do the comp. test and let us know what happens

I appreciate your help. My gut tells me it's a timing chain. But you're right. Must get back to basics. Pull a compression test to see what I'm working with. The car is in great shape but having over 200k it's really not worth the time and money swapping a used engine which could also have problems. Might part the car out if there's no compression or if it's a timing chain. Smh!
