My temp gauge is malfunctioning goes right hot without starting the car?

You may have to get a diagnostic check done on it. Not sure what the cost on it would be. I own an Envoy and for the diagnostic check it cost me 145.00 . Or you can find out if it is the Thermostat and just change that to see if it makes a difference. Good luck

There seems to be lots of questions but no real answers on this site, is there any one that can give any indication of what the problem is and how to fix it, possible Sensor and you need to get a diognostic report done or s thermostat, this is what I was told by my RACQ guy in Australia, my gauge is showing hot and overheating but the car is cold?

I have same issues with my 2002 BMW 330I the temp gauge goes red after driving about 2 to 3 miles then little while later it comes back to middle....I just had radiator fluid system change. This car is like having a second wife...expensive

I am currently having this problem. I spoke with my brother about it (who is a mechanic and specializes on foreign cars) - he stated to go have the fluid checked, which I did and it was not low. While sitting at the oil changing place, the temp gauge shot up - when I told the guy, he took off the radiator cap and the temp came back down to the 12:00 o'clock position quickly. He said I probably just had air in the cooling system and I or a mechanic needed to bleed out the air. I told my brother this and he stated that air would not get in the system unless, at some point, radiator fluid got very low and/or there was some other problem that was causing this besides air in the coolant system. Then noticed while at work the next day, my car had been leaking water (mixed with coolant) in a BAD way (I park in the same spot every day). I took photos of this and sent them to my brother. He said DO NOT DRIVE IT AT ALL! Stating that if the temp gets in the red, I'm risking blowing the head gasket. Since my brother lives 45 minutes from me, and he works out of his home as a mechanic, it's been hard for him to fit me in his schedule for him to drive to where I live to check out everything. I then spoke with another professional and he immediately saw the problem (at least it's what I hope is the problem). It's the Coolant Temp Sensor part. When I told my brother this, he agreed that it had to be that because everything that was happening with my car was exactly what it was doing (no heat, temp guage being at 12:00 o'clock position unless stopped by red light and/or traffic, then it moving up quickly to the red (which when it got to the 1:00 o'clock to 1:30 position, I turned my car off, no matter where I was, pulled over if I had to just so I could get back into actual moving traffic (my car in a continuous forward motion kept my temp gauge normal). My brother is replacing the part tomorrow and I'm pretty sure this is my problem. The part # at Autozone is # SU5741 (Coolant temp sensor for a 2004 BMW 325i). Hope this helps anyone who is having the same problem.

Check the temperature sensor or the wiring on the sensor.

On the older BMWs, temp gauge in the red is a common sign of a failed DME. It is normally a RAM ROM error, Checksum or internal DME error. www.the-ecu-pro.com offers them as a replacement for $500.
