Oil 2004 BMW

Asked by cttman Mar 13, 2017 at 08:27 PM about the 2004 BMW 3 Series 325xi Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello I added a quart of oil to my 2004 BMW 325xi while it
was running and my car started knocking and smoking.
Why? Is there any damage?  Thanks.

Once the oil ran down into the engine did the noise and smoke go away?

Did you spill oil on the exhaust? If the engine is running smooth and there is no smoke your engine probably is OK.

Un-metered air coming into the engine from an open oil filler cap will sometimes make them run rough. Do not add oil with the engine running.
