Transmission

Asked by Doug253blue Oct 19, 2007 at 02:48 PM about the 2000 BMW 5 Series 540i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Auto trans on my 2000 540 acting up. Shifting medium to hard--no change. Grandma mode causes confusion for tanny--what geat should I be in--interstate has slight surging a metalic sound that almost has a rythem and sound cycle.  Should I change the tranny fluid? Could this be software? Is it time to sell her?

Thanks

Doug

You might try changing the trans fluid and filter, or having the transmission flushed. Check condition of the fluid first. I would probably suggest selling the vehicle as it could also be something major, like a front pump going out, or solenoid packs in the transmission, which can easily run several hundred dollars to replace.
