Use your key to unlock the trunk. Insert key in the trunk lock. I believe it turns left to unlock. Just push the key forward to depress the trunk button and that should open the trunk. You should find the hinged battery cover on the far right. There should be a hand grip on it. Grab with your right hand and pull to your left. It opens sort of like turning a page on a 'book.' Then jump your cars battery, With a portable 12V battery jumper (the best) or jumper cables to another car. If you've not "jumped" a car before, ask someone who has successfully that you trust. Hope this helps your day go a bit better! Cheers. Ciao

Also found this...The emergency unlock is known by lifting the passenger door handle and then turning the key over a certain resistance. Even with a dead battery the trunk can be opened with the key by turning it anti-clockwise and then push the door unlock button
My 2000 740il had dead batt, key would not turn the cyl on the trunk and the switch did not work. so what I did was and took video which I will post later today is.... Take the back lic plate off, follow your finger from the lock cyl to the cyl side of the lic plate area about 1 1/2 in over from the screw and 1 1/2 in. up and drill a hole carefully about 1/2 in in dia. only through the plastic and metal then stop so you dont go through the cord. stick a heavy duty wire hanger bent at end in there and grab the release wire between the cyl and the latch and pull. Trunk open. Bondo the hole after repairing anything and touch up paint back to new. POW.
