WHY IS AN AVERAGE SPEED 19MPH SHOWING ON MY DASHBOARD

Speed sensor may be bad .

It just may be your average speed. If you are stopped, the time is running, and your speed is 0. If your driving to the highway for 15 minutes at say and average of 10 MPH for the start and stop traffic, you have 15 minutes of 10 MPH traffic to overcome. Once your on the highway and you get stuck behind that white Toyota with a headless driver going 35 in the fast lane, your average speed will be affected. If your on the highway going 80 MPH and you want to know your fast average speed, reset your speed to 0, then you will have your average speed on the highway at highway speed. Once you slow down or stop for a pit stop or gas, your average speed will also go down. I drove 45 miles at speeds above 60 MPH, and when I got to my destination, my average speed was 35 MPH due to getting gas, driving to my house (5 miles) and then to the freeway, 10 minutes at stop and go traffic. I drove from the LA area to Utah going between 65 to 79 MPH for 6 hours and averaged just about 60 MPH due to slow traffic in the LA/Riverside and LV areas.

I stopped in St. George, UT for gasoline. Car was not left idling. Then zeroed out my "average speed gauge". I drove about 1/2 mile to the freeway on-ramp. My average speed gauge showed 38 miles per hour. I then drove, without stopping or any traffic delays to Provo, UT. My gauge, when I exited the freeway, was at 48 miles average. Tell me I don't have a problem. My KIA dealer called tech services and they said the gauge was designed to work that way. Work what way? Give me a break. I think it's broken and they don't want to replace it under warranty. Anyone else have such a problem with KIA service?

GuruDCHZ5. It soundalike the transmission sensor is bad or has a lose connection. Is it still under warranty? UTube should have a short films on how to replace or test the transmission speed sensor. It may also throw off your average MPG. If you have a GPS device that gives your actual speed, check and see if that is reading the same as your car's pedometer. If not, it is the speed sensor. A new sensor is a heck of a lot cheaper than a speeding ticket and insurance increase. If you pull it out, I believe auto parts shops like Pep Boys or auto zone can test the sensor.

What to do about my AV Speed

The computer calculates the average speed far more accurately that you or I can. Just because you are driving 70 on the freeway does not mean you did not actually average 50 when you include jams, stop and start and other things.
