Posible cylinder and block warping

Asked by 04031962 Mar 05, 2019 at 04:32 PM about the 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son has a 2011 outback w/approx. 150K miles.  Noticed engine hot light came on few weeks back.  took it in and shop didn't see anything wrong except for coolant a bit low.  Said it may have been a glitch of some sort.  Today he experienced symptoms again, and the car shutdown on him at a light.  Had it towed to different shop.  They are not sure of the cause at this point, but are indicating that the cylinders and even block could possible be warped.  Assuming this is correct, what is a reasonable cost expectation for this repair?  I have no knowledge of Subaru and this type of repair.  I don't have the quote yet form the shop to share, but nay insight is appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, overheating can completely ruin the engine. Could be a blown head gasket and that can lead to a warped head. The only way the shop can determine the extent of the damage is to remove the cylinder head and check inside. You are probably looking at anywhere from $1500 for a head gasket to $3000 or more for an engine.

$3000 or more for an engine? YES...I think definitely more..... At this point...I would think of just getting rid of the car.... any transmission issues? Between a transmission failure and engine....this car is done.
