Media hub versus DIY USB port for new '11 Outback limited

I am thinking of buying 2011 Limited edition. The standard stereo does not seem to come with a USB port. There is an option to install a "media hub" for almost $500, but it appears that this hub is nothing but a cable with a USB port. It seems that my only alternatives are:
1. To buy the car without the hub and replace the stereo with a unit from a 3rd party provider like Crutchfield.
2. To buy the car without the hub and try to add the USB interface to the standard stereo myself.

The bad part about #1 is that I will lose steering wheel controls. About #2, I have no idea whether this is doable and how easy and cheap it is to do it well. Do you know?

I am also curious about what you have done here. I have purchased the 2011 Outback Limited without Navi and without the USB connection. Does the head unit have a USB connection on the backside or does the entire head unit get replaced? I guess my question is: Is the head unit already USB capable and taking it in to get it added for $500 just them adding the cable?

I have the Nav system in my '11 and I wouldn't recommend it for the money. The USB port is in the center console and there is a slot for the cord so you can close the armrest and not smash the cord. The nav system looks good but its choice of routes leaves a lot to be desired. It always takes a longer route than necessary. It is nice to have the larger screen for the backup camera though and I imagine the Nav will help the resale value also. Watching DVD's on it is nice also (when stopped only)
