car overheating

Asked by stacyb2015 Apr 10, 2016 at 10:00 PM about the 2002 Cadillac Seville STS FWD

Question type: General

Ok so I got this car a few days ago and it's a 2002 cadillac
seville sts.  When I drive it the temp gauge goes up all the
way to the red and then the light will come on real fast,go
back off and go back to right under the red. When the car is
idling it starts descending back to where it should normally
be.  I can sit idling for long periods of time and also run the
ac while idling and have no issues, it's only during
acceleration that it seems to climb to the red. We have
checked everything we can think of and all seems well, this
really had us at a loss. Does anyone know what may be
happening or could you maybe offer some advice?
Thanks!!!

You checked if fan is working? Is radiator restricted? When your accelerating water flows faster to cool off engine faster, if water is restricted by clogged radiator, with higher rpm's, than car will not get cooled. Thermostat too can be restricting flow of water. Start looking at these basic things first
