Is a Chevy Silverado 2500 a 3/4 ton truck?

KINDA. The Silverado 2500 for the most part is a 1/2 ton truck with 3/4 ton suspension. Unless you really can't afford the 3500 series truck and can't use a 1500 series truck, don't waste your time or money because you will overload the thing and cause issues down the line.

I've have worked G.M. for more 16yrs.+ Any 1500 series is a one 1/4 ton truck. No matter what . A 2500 series is a half 1/2 ton truck. And last but not least a ONE TON truck 3500 series also called a duelly. Because the duel tires on both sides of thr rear axle. This all on commercial vehicles only.
Someone told me I need a Chevy Duramax Desel. I looked that up and it said it was a Silverado 2500. Still no good for 4000 lb?

Sorry "Wellsuited2, but your information is inaccurate in the fact that the 3500 series can be purchased without the dual wheel configuration and a dual wheel package can be purchased from the factory for a 2500 series truck. Electric Boat in Groton orders new units every 4 years in that configuration of dual or non-dual set ups depending on what they are doing with the truck. -- Any of these trucks will pull 4000 pounds if you have the right engine size, transmission, transmission coolers, gear ratio, alternator and electric brakes to the trailer.
Fordtudor37, your answer is incorrect in the way that most 2500 are just 1500 with better suspension. The facts that suspension is main difference between all different classes of trucks; that is what defines it by its size. The motor and drivetrain is the difference in package and towing, not 1/2 ton to a 1 ton. You are correct in saying that you can get a 1 ton not with duallys.
A 2500 is a 3/4 ton. With pulling just 4,000 pounds you could use a normal 1500 with a 5.3 v8. So in summation that can easily be pulled with a 1/2 ton with a v8 in it. You can find all the towing capacity information you need from the Chevrolet website.
We are just a bunch of cowboys in the barn drinking moonshine and beer talking cattle Dunn which is which about trucks . The last one to pass out has it right becus he got the last word and beer
Most of the answers here are all WRONG. I don't know what you ppl are smoking. A modern 2500 truck (in old school terms referred to as a "3/4 ton") is NOT a 1/2 ton with better suspension. In fact, as for GM trucks, the ONLY difference between the 2500 and the 3500 is that the 2500 has two stage rear leafs and the 3500 has three stage (the third stage being a helper spring)...that's it, nothing more. So really, it would be much more accurate to say that a 2500 (or 3/4 ton) is a 3500 (or 1 ton) light. Once upon a time there were much more major differences between "3/4 and 1 ton" but not so much anymore. As for pulling 4000 lbs...that's a joke. My wife's minivan would pull that (rated up to 5000 lbs.) and I actually even pulled my boat which weighs just under 6K on the trailer with her minivan without any problem. I would never pull it very far nor try to launch it with the van (front wheel drive) but it worked just fine to take the boat to my buddies house to store for the winter. I posted a picture of my boat hooked up to the minivan for you non-believers.
I have been told that the same transmission will go in a 1500 versus a 2500 on a 1998 Chevrolet pickup I purchased the transmission for a 1500 and I have a 2500 do they interchange

Jesus; you guys are on drugs with some of these answers!
I saw a 2000 grand marquis pulling a 20’ Grady white boat without any problems. The marquis is a v8 f150 with a car body on it. A 2006 Chevy Silverado basic 6cyl can tow up to 5600lbs while the v8 tows 10,000lbs. Do your research ppl. It’s not hard to figure it out
From my years driving pickup trucks , a 1/2 ton would be the 1500, A 3/4 ton would be the 2500 series, and 1 ton would be the 3500 series. Years ago the 1/2 ton was a 6 cyl. The 3/4 ton was an 8 cyl. 1 ton was diesel.
I to a 34 foot 5th wheel with My 99 2500 and it's Dry weight is15700 lbs, it pulls it fine
Very confusing. I am looking at 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500 LS. The vin lookup says this is a 1/2ton light duty truck. 1GCHC29K98E143473 I need 7000lb of trailer towed.
I have a 99 chevy 2500 4x4 and would never take any amount of money for it. It has the pulling power of a bull.
I had a 1994 Chevy Silverado, that my dealer said was a "Heavy Half", That it was set up to plow. It did have all the extra coolers, the high output alternator, and the suspension didn't drop more than 1/2-3/4. " when I raised my blade. I plowed with it well into 2010, the only reason I got rid of it was the frame rotted right in half. Engine had 69k when I sold it. Is there really a version of the Silverado called the Heavy Half, or was he just stroking me for the sale?
