Electrical system needs serviced

Asked by Terri May 23, 2020 at 06:34 PM about the 2000 Cadillac DeVille Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought car, no problems for 8
months. Had someone check fuse
relays due to faulty fuel pump, ended
up having fuel pump replaced. Now the
dash board gives me message
Electrical System needs serviced, amd
check engine coolant. I smell what
seems to be an "electrical smell", but
my engine has not ever run hot. I'm
thinking the wrong harness has a spot
where the wire is touching metal
maybe?? I had it hooked up at auto
parts store , code generated were o2
sensors being bad, amd some injectors
were staying open. Nothing to do with
electrical system. The check engine
coolant light just came on yesterday,
where as the service electrical system
had been on for a week. Please help. I
do not have money to keep putting into
this car. I am not working due to this
pandemic. I'm half afraid to drive my
car now, what can I do?

The first thing to do since you're losing coolant is to test the coolant for combustion gases. If combustion gases are present, get rid of the vehicle! It's not worth fixing! Your deVille has a Northstar engine. All Northstar engines blow head gaskets sooner or later! If you're between about 90 and 120 thousand miles you're right in the window for head gasket failure! This is upwards of $3500 to repair! For starters the engine and transmission have to be removed from the bottom of the vehicle. There's no other way to do the job!! So before putting any money in this vehicle be SURE the head gasket is not blown!! Hope that helps! Jim
