Alternator going bad 3 times

Asked by Aryon Mar 13, 2020 at 04:43 PM about the 2011 GMC Acadia SLT-1 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We bought my daughter a used 2011 GMC Acadia
in November of 2019, in January 2020 out of blue
supposedly alternator went out got it changed and
serpentine belt.  A month later alternator caught
on fire had it replaced 3 weeks ago and now it's
not holding charge again.  How can 3 alternators
go bad in 2 month span?  Is there something that
could keep making alternator go bad?  Help I'm
about to go trade it

Have you done any diagnostics on that charging system? I saw several trouble codes for your charging system in my database. Four po codes and one p1 code. Around here, some of the national brand auto stores will check p0 codes for free, if there are any. Note the diagram, your generator is computer controlled. I'd have to check those wiring circuits. Just my opinion.
