Will not start. No crank or click yet a spinning noise

Went to start my SUV this morning and started to crank over
then just a spinning noise. No crank over no clicking just a
spinning noise that whines down after turning back key to off
position

That's a bad starter. Inside the starter there's a part that pushes the starter gear forward to mesh with the flywheel gear to crank the engine. What you're hearing is the starter gear spinning without going forward to crank the engine. Hope that helps! Jim

Maybe bang on it if you want to get it to a garage it may start , Use a memory saver if you drop it yourself
