Where are the relays for the 7 pin trailer hookup located on a 2011 Jeep Liberty?

Asked by Sui_generis May 25, 2015 at 04:01 PM about the 2011 Jeep Liberty Sport 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My trailer's left turn signal was locked in the "on" position.  The left turn signal/stop lamp
hookup at the Jeep's 7 pin connector was showing constant power.  Right side worked
fine.  Seems to me like it is probably a relay issue.  After searching online for quite a
while, I could not find help locating these relays in the 2011 Liberty.  Using my ears, I
located the bank of three relays.  I will memorialize my process here so it will be
searchable for my year and model:
On the driver's side, in the rear, remove the jack access panel on the sidewall.  You
should see wires going to the tail lamp assembly through a wide foam insert.  Pull out the
foam insert and reach into the hole.  There is a cluster of three relays wrapped in foam
that you can pull from this hole.  I was able to fix the stuck relay and now get a flashing
signal from the trailer hookup instead of a steady "on".

Behind the battery, in the PDS (Power Distribution Box) show fuse cavity M2 for trailer lighting and M4 'trailer tow'..whatever that means, maybe trailer brakes since it's not lights. No relays other than the ones you describe. Page 479. I could not find an image, not one I can say is accurate, there are Wrangler and Cherokee and idk if same.

Yep... Just as you said. Behind the jack waddled up in a foam ball... Lemme have a "Talk" with the engineers....
