Compressor or clutch

Asked by Chris Feb 08, 2019 at 11:55 PM about the 2011 Nissan Rogue S Krom Edition

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My kid is out in Cali ( I'm in Florida ), couple months ago, the engine started to make a noise. Took it in to a shop, they said it was the A/C compressor and for her to not run the A/C so nothing internal would get contaminated. So she hasn't.

Now to today, SUV wont start. Towed to same shop as above. They told her " the A/C compressors front bearing/pulley locked up causing the no start, but nothing internal was damaged so no worry for contaminates". They recommend a new compressor and belt.

The Rogue's clutch on the compressor is replaceable, so doesn't it make sense the noise that was heard originally was the bearing in the clutch and now it finally locked up? I don't know for sure if the Rogues compressor has the bearing in it or if in fact its at the front of the compressor ( if its at the front of the compressor, ok I can see a new compressor ), does anyone know? I know its really hard to say what the original noise was, I just don't want her being yanked for 900$ when all it is, is a clutch, but since she's a young girl... eh she doesn't know any better, know what I'm saying. Thanks

I'm about to swap out my wife's A/C compressor pulley, bearing, and clutch. They come in a kit for $50 and it'll take me less than a hour since I've done it before. Though the compressor itself does have bearings on the inside, and if your compressor siezed on the inside, it's junk and likely spread metal shavings throughout the A/C system, needing extra parts to be thoroughly cleaned / replaced. Though that contamination would not affect your engine's lubrication or cooling. Engine has oil, cooling has coolant, A/C has refrigerant. All closed systems to each other. one way to check if your compressor is junk is to disengage the serpentine belt, and turn the outer clutch plate by hand (not the pulley). It should turn over but give resistance. If it's really hard to turn, or doesn't turn at all the compressor is junk. call me at 978.888.8546 if you want to talk it over, I'm about to replace the clutch/pulley/bearing on my wife's Rogue and have done it before on two other cars.

GuruMP317, I need to replace the clutch magnet on my wife's 2015 Rogue Select. The best I can find is the whole clutch for $450. Where did you find a kit for $50?
