limited top speed

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a used 2012 Mustang with the 3.7 and automatic transmission. On the way home I found out that the top speed has been set to 80 m.p.h. I took it to a Ford tech. And he tried to reset it, but could not. He said that the key I got with the car, is not the same one that was used to limit the speed. What do I do now to have it changed? Thanks.

I'd be seriously pissed if this happened to me! If you can't locate that controlling key or jimmy's "playing with the menu" suggestion doesn't work...I'd take it back to the dealer you bought it from....get 'em to fix it or threaten to sue their asses! That is some serious BS!

what I have done on vehicles like that is use the factory scan tool and clear the programmed keys and reprogram new ones it just erases all the MyKey bull. you can use the same key after you erase them but you need a minimum of 2 to program to the vehicle or else it wont start. There may be another way but thats the only way i know how to do it.

What is the speed on your tires? Sometimes that is a limiting factor on a new car.

I can guarantee you the tire rating is not the issue here . it is a my key feature to where say parents let their kids drive it, they have certain keys when put in the igniton it will change the way the vehicle operates set by the main key. it can even limit how high the volume goes on the radio and of course the speed in this case.

I never heard of tires limiting your speed.how would the car know what the tires are rated for.

Thank you all for your replies. The car will be going to a Ford dealer next week. They will make me a new key ( I need a spare one anyway) and use both keys to do away with the 80 m.p.h. limit. The car belonged to a rental agency previously. It was probably something they do with all their cars.

Considering that the only place you can even legally go 80mph is on a racetrack, why would you need to go even faster? Legally you can drive 80mph or faster on any street or highway.
