Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Our son just bought his first car and 2 days in
we have to jump start it every 24 hours.
Our mechanic can’t figure out where the drain
or short is in the car.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

First check the easy things. Is a light staying on somewhere? Like a map light, interior lights, trunk light, or underhood light. Is the radiator cooling fan or air conditioning fan running after the ignition is turned off? Once you've ruled out these things, disconnect the positive battery cable and hook up a 12 volt test light in series between the battery terminal and the disconnected battery cable. If you have a current draw the test light will glow brightly. With a modern vehicle a dim glow can be considered normal as the vehicle computers are always drawing power. But if the light is glowing brightly, you have a problem. Start removing and reinstalling all the fuses, one by one, until the light goes out or down to a dim glow. Once that happens you'll know what circuit the draw is on. Then you can check the individual items on that circuit, such as the radio, power windows, etc. the same way by unplugging individual devices after you put the suspect circuit fuse back in the fuse box. When the test light goes out or to a dim glow the second time, you have the offending device. It's very tedious and time consuming, but it's the only way I know to fix it. Hope that helps! Jim
One other thing, load test the battery. It may be the battery is just old and weak. Jim
