2001 Mustang GT slipping and clunking on acceleration

I have a 2001 Mustang GT Convertible. It seems to slip and catch when
accelerating or when easing off gas and reapplying gas. I also noticed the
rear passenger wheel seems to slide in and out a little, but doesn't tilt like
with a wheel bearing. It feels like the axle is loose in the backend. Is this an
issue and does it just need a new axle? Is this a complex job? I've change
CV Axles before but this is my first work on a Ford.

Auto or manual transmission? You should probably jack it up (support it safely) and check for play in the rear suspension.
