Good question...do you have faith in the company that brought you the Japanese "zero" lightweight battle aircraft? or the American Steel mighty P-40?....sadly it is something like that...lightweight engineered performance or 'nuff steel please~
I would say a toss up. Care and maintenance are the key ingredients for longevity. How often do you hear of japanese drivetrains lasting 200K-300K? Frequently the domestics do. Also, when imported components fail, it's a costly proposition. To be fair the early 2.7L engines suffered from sludge issues, (probably related to maintenance) which were corrected in the 05's. I have had the Mitsubishi and the 2.7 Chrysler, and both were trouble free.
As Sparky222 has said - maintenance and care are the key... The "marriage" of Chrysler and Mitsubishi dates back to the 70s... The use of the 3.0 V6 motor from Mitsubishi dates to the late 80s... The biggest issue I ever encountered with the 3.0 V6 was with the valves. This is where care and maintenance comes into play. In higher mileage situations, the valve train and valve may have excessive wear and the engine may need valve work or to have the valves replaced. Some Japanese drive-trains can easily go for many hundreds of thousands of miles. I had a Subaru that finally needed a major overhaul (head gasket finally went) at 320,000 miles!
I Mitsubishi 3.0 will last a lot longer especially with proper maintenance.I have a 2002 Chrysler Sebring Coupe 3.0 with auto tranny and has been trouble free.Oil and transmission fluid changes, timing belt changes and now my car have 174,xxx miles with no check engine light and runs like new.Only thing I don't like is changing the spark plugs(rear ones)you must remove manifold but the front three are easy.
