Is there a timing belt on the 2010 Dodge Charger 3.5L V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One mechanic quoted me a price to replace timing belt and change water pump at the
same time.  Firestone told me I had a timing chain and did not have to worry about
changing water pump either.  Who is right?

Most all V-6s and V-8s have timing chains. A leaking water pump is sometimes a tricky thing to catch. They have a weep hole in them and sometimes they will leak n sometimes they won't. If its leaking at the mounting gasket(s) or the impeller shaft it will be a constant leak. Have it looked at by a REPUTABLE mechanic.

At this time I have no water pump problems. My main concern was to find out if I have a timing chain or belt on my car. I understand if I have a timing chain, it wont need changing but a timing belt does. The confusion was when one mechanic told me I had a timing belt and the other said I had a timing chain.

Sound like that mechanic was trying to up sell you on a big pricey job. Your car should have a chain.

According to my info. The 2006-2010 dodge chargers 3.5L v6 engines are timing belts. They should be replaced at 105k. And yes water pump replacement is advised when replacing the timing belt. Oh this is an interference engine. That means if belt breaks or jumps time major engine damage may occur. Have it replaced on time.

Dandyoun is right it has a timing belt. I guess I'm just used to GM vehicles with timing chains in V-6's

Never ask a Firestone, supposed mechanic, any questions about engines. Firestone makes tires not engines. It has a belt but, being it is a Mopar, why wouldn't you have contacted a Mopar dealer? Seriously doubt they would have led you astray............................

My 2010 V-6 3.5L dodge challenger has gone thru 2 water pumps and 2 timing belts, just like the book says u should change ur timing BELT, it's in the housing of the water pump on the 2010 dodge challenger and it's a BELT not a chain, the water pump goes out first right around 105-110 thousand miles, and like clockwork the waterpump went out a 2nd time on me at about 200k, I changed both belts and water pumps myself, the first change took about 10 to 11 hrs, but that was changing water pump timing belt and plugs. The 2nd change I was more familiar with and took about 7 man hrs, so it got easier, I am plugging along at 215k miles hope to get at least another 100k outa this car! Other than that it's been a good car for 215k miles so far just the 2 water pumps and since you gotta take off the timing belt to change the water pump then 2 new timing belts, they hella cheap too!!! Good luck, hey if a girl can change her timing belt u guys got this! PS U need a pulley puller and take off the fan pulley to get back into the motor..

Yes your 3.5 has a timing belt and the water pump is driven by it as well it also has an hydraulic tensioner that keeps tension on the belt at all times...it is good standing practice to change them all at the same time ...this is done so that a month after you put a new belt on and your water pump goes your not doing the job all over again and paying twice for a job that should have been done once..so basically its preventive maintenance ....see pic

I just did the head gasket on my 06 Charger 3.5 and it definitely has a timing belt not a chain. I believe the 2.7 has a chain.
