2010 Audi A4 EPC light on, car wont start
Asked by Guru927T6 Jul 19, 2017 at 02:39 PM about the 2010 Audi A4 2.0T Premium Plus FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Car had little bit of power loss before. Would take a little bit longer to start. Couple days later tried to start and it wouldn't even attempt. All lights and radio will turn on but no motor. A mechanic said timing belt slipped and top end needs to be rebuilt, but that doesn't make much sense to me considering everything leading up to it not starting. Any ideas??

Give me more explanations and model and make, also when was it last serviced, i`m almost sure it sets itself, i will explain later.
2010 Audi A4 premium plus Up to date oil changes, tune up about a year ago. Car started to lose power, not a lot. Would take a little bit longer for the engine to turn over and actually start. Parked it for a couple days, tried to start it to take it to a shop and engine wouldn't start. Just makes one click noise and everything else in the interior turn on as normal. Then EPC light was illuminated.
Also, AC would be cold and turn a coolish warm tempature and then back to cold as car was driving
Since the EPC is used on multiple other systems on the vehicle, it is likely that other warning lights will be illuminated on the dash as well. Typically, the stability control and cruise control will be disabled and their respective lights will be illuminated as well. The check engine light may also come on to show that the engine itself isn’t operating at normal efficiency. To try and protect the engine, the computer can limit the vehicle’s throttle and the car may feel sluggish as a result. You will need to get the car scanned for trouble codes that can be used to identify the problem. Once repairs have been done and the codes cleared, everything should return to normal.
But that's the thing, no other lights were on but the EPC light. Do the symptoms seem like it could need the top end being rebuilt?
EPC light means it`s protecting something and throttle will very. Please understand if the top was redone, something went wrong. Or the computer was never reset for new top. Get an expert on your car a.s.a.p. It will break down. Sorry to say. Let me know.
This might help. Epc light was on with my Audi for long time. Fighting speed and all other lights keep coming on. My battery went out and I changed to a new one and everything went away. I don't know if new battery did the job but so far epc light, engine light are off two weeks and still off.
1 click when turn the key makes it sound like the battery is dead or low voltage maybe need new battery.... With epc light the most common problem when this light is on is due to electical issues...could be coil pack pin connector wires are broken inside and are stuck together or connector to crank sensor or camshaft sensor...just pull the rubber cover down on those connector and you should be able to see the wires...good luck
My 2009 was idling rough at stop lights, EPC light and engine light on also ESP light and brake light was on. Took it to Audi they replaced the oil control valve and replaced battery.
Sorry for bringing up a late response. My Audi A6 2014 PP Quatrro EPC Light came on followed by the engine light and the car got sluggish and then completely stopped on me. This is the second time this has happened within two weeks. I just got the car back on July 11, 2017 from an Audi dealership. I'm noticing patterns and I'm wondering if others are experiencing the same. The first time, I was parked in front of my house. Car was running and the AC was on maybe middle to full blast. I was also watching the Owners Manual Video built into the car. Then out of no where the car starting to make a noise when I put the car in reverse. Then the EPC light came on and then the engine light. Moments later the car stopped. That was on June 29, 2018. Now on 7/16/18, I was driving home and got to a red light. Then as I tried to accelerate on the green light the car went sluggish. Then the EPC light came on. I was able to pull over right before the engine completely died on me. Now, in this case, the AC was on again middle to full blast and the MMI was streaming music through Bluetooth. After a 20-30 minute wait. The car started again and I slowly and safely was able to get the car to my house. I wasn't going to leave my car unlocked for two hours by itself for the tow truck to come. Now, I am waiting to hear back from Audi Dealership. I would also like to mention on both days the temperature was in the high 80s degree F and the car was reading between 95-100 degree F on both occasions. The car only has 52876 miles on it. I'm the second owner and only use 91 octane, which Audi recommends. The first time it was in the shop they cleaned our the fuel lines and said they couldn't get the EPC light on. Thoughts?
Hey, I have a 2014 Audi A4, 1 owner and 39k. My car did this exact same thing twice. Once it stops driving If I wait maybe 30 to 45 minutes I'm able to start it up and drive. I'm taking it to the dealer but did you ever find out the issue for your Audi
Well they changed the fuel pump and the car was able to go from Pittsburgh pa to Ocean City MD and back. However they did say nothing was wrong with the car. It’s been a week and a little over 700 miles. I can report back if anything else change. Out of curiosity are you getting decent gas mileage? At the time I was averaging 10mpgs which after the fuel pump car was less sluggish and get around 18-22 in city 26-28 highway.
Thanks for the update, it was very helpful. Alot of people have said it's either the feul pump or a sensor however I'll soon find out. I feel like a lot of people have had this same issue with their Audi and it's pretty dangerous, the car literally stops while I'm driving. I'm not sure how many miles I get as I've never really measured it but hopefully I notice a significant difference if they have to replace the feel pump.
I find 91 octane works perfect. On our trip to Ocean City all they had was 93. My car wasn’t thrilled about that. It burns faster than using 91. I know for sure to always use 91.
My 2012 A8 does the same thing where the EPC light would turn on and my car would reduce speed to the point where it's completely off. It's been happening for 2 months now and I've left it at the Audi dealership and they have no answer as to what's wrong with it.
This is the exact same thing that's been happening to me. I have a 2014 Audi A4. In less than a year I am on my 3rd fuel pump and thousands of dollars in repairs and it continues to happen. AAA knows me by name. My mechanic and the dealer seem to be at a loss. My next step is an Attorney because now matter what I have done the problem persists.

now i understand why do we all have one problem this cars EPC all the time,i now believe its AUDI problems you cant even enjoy a good drive with family im now selling mine i have changed fuel filter, fuel pump still the same thing ,i dont think this EPC will ever go anyway i have done 3 diagnosis it came clean but still epc comes angry wth AUDI FOREVR
Class Action time! This is a complete nightmare. They want me to resolve the issue by trading in my 2014 for a 2018 that has huge incentives...ohhh and did I mention I'd have to put at least $5,000 down because I'm upside down in this one. I'm looking for the name of an Attorney that can help us all. The A4 is their top selling car. If there are problems with this engine if will hurt Audi severely and the A4 is not on the VW/Audi Engine Class Action. I think we're being screwed over.
My a4 is doing the same thing with the epc light... I changed the oil and the cam shaft sensor.. and it's running so bad.. I just bought it used and sol. It won't start at this point. I have no clue what to do. The people at AutoZone said it was the cam shaft. All for not
Guru927T6, did you ever find out what was wrong with your car?
I dont have A answer but I'm having the same problems with my 2011 A4 class suit sounds good

I have a 2008 and same prob although it has not left me stranded yet. When the EPC comes on I turn the car off ASAP wait a couple mins and it’s fine. I am learning how to work on this as labor is super expensive but this code is driving my crazy
My 2009 A6 has been having the same reoccurring issue with the EPC light, engine light, sluggish running, etc... It has left me stranded. I have brought it in two times previously for the same issue. I’m bringing it in today for the same issue; it’s been running sluggish, having troubles starting, and and yesterday it wouldn’t stay going if I pulled my foot off the gas. I am the second owner. I’ve had it less than two years.
Has anyone figured out what it is I have an 07 a4 and had the problem couldn't get no power to the take off if you know what it is let me know or let's get this settled in court because it seams like this happens in all a4s all years
I have a 2007 A3, having same issue... EPC and check engine light, running sluggish. I had the fuel pump, timing belt, and a whole bunch of other parts replaced about a year ago... what's up with the class action??? How do we all get in on this???
I'm in the same boat. I have 2010 Audi a4 3.2L. EPC and engine light. It didn't start and I thought it was battery so I changed it, no luck, had it fully inspected by roadside assistant, no luck, they couldn't figure it out. It's currently stuck in a 4hour parking zone for over 24hrs now. just hoping it doesn't get towed before I can take it in somewhere.
Looks like there was a class action suit for 2008-2012... I am out of luck but those of you within those years might be able to get in on this! https://timingchainlitigation.com/
I’m having the same issue with my 2000 Audi A4 Avant. Currently on the side of the road.

Wow!seems like this is too common on these cars.I have an 08 a4 just got a call from the dealer and they can't find the problem, idk Wats next but at this point they should have the knowledge of the cause to this issue!
A4 B8, 8k,When shut off engine without any previous warning, and we have indication alarm EPC with engine, the problem will be fuel pump or electronic circuit of fuel. The AUDI expert say that 99% is the circuit
Change out the relay, mine was a 614.

I have a Audi 2007 Q7 I recent had to replace my air compressor picked up my car when it was drive it about 60 miles and my check engine light & EPC light came on. What should I do? Can I drive it? It’s the only car I have to get to work and work about 50 miles alway help please just spent about $2000 to replace air compressor + labor.
@GuruHZJNN I don’t see you comment on the board yet but I did get an email. I traded my A6 in earlier this year and got a Q7 14 used with around 93000 miles. The compressor also went in May on a rainy day. Water leaked in the footwell of the passenger side. There are relays for the ESC and TCM below there. Long story short water fried the wires and the car wouldn’t shift out of park. Check engine light was on with ESC light. Everything else worked fine. Repair was about 800 but the AC drain lines are clogged with possible debris and Audi wanted another 900 just to check not fix but check. My advice is to check to make sure the passenger footwell carpet is not soaked or wet. If so that can be an indicator that your car is about to loose connection.
Miami, thanks for the tip. How do we figure out which relay to replace though? I understand you replaced your 617 relay but what is it’s function so we know the corresponding relay to replace in our vehicles if that is, in fact, the underlying issue with our vehicles?? Thanks
I have a 2012 Audi A4 Quattro, and I just had my car shut off on me after a u-turn while driving to work. The EPC came on when it shut off, but I was able to put it in park and start it right back up. I've had the car for over a year with nothing but issues. I've had to replace all four spark plugs and ignition coils, oil pressure switch, camshaft position sensor, camshaft tensioner gasket is being replaced tomorrow (7/22/2019). I also tried replacing my MAF sensor, but it was pointless as the OEM sensor works best and usually doesn't go bad. I've had to change (DO NOT FLUSH) my transmission fluid (which is something you should always do or have done no matter what Audi tells you). I can feel my transmission slipping from time to time, but at one point it was so bad that my car wouldn't switch gears. Come to find out, I didn't even have much fluid in my transmission. I do my own fixes unless it's something either too time consuming or a little beyond my scope of being comfortable doing.
I have a 2008 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro S-Line and while driving down the interstate at 75 mph, the EPC light came on and I lost all power.. thankfully I was able to coast to the side of the road. It would not start after that... it would turn over but not start. My mechanic told me it was the timing... What is the likeliness of that? I ask because this is a new mechanic to me and that's what they told me was wrong with my 2008 Nissan Altima about 2 months ago...? Any insight here would be great! Thanks!
I have a 14 Audi Q5, just got it 4 months ago. Took it for an oil change yesterday so that I could drive from San Diego to Phoenix to visit family. Well, without warning, halfway through the drive the EPC light came on, and car chugged and cutoff. In the middle of the Arizona desert. With my 2 kids in the back. And of course no one out here works on foreign cars, and it's a holiday weekend, so I'm stuck without my car, not even knowing what's wrong with it, and even if they potentially fix it, I have to drive 3 hours over desert and mountains to get it home. I just got this car and I take good care of it, details biweekly and only ever use 91 octane. Why can't they just make reliable cars...?
617 relay has been replaced with 644 relay, in my B7 convertible, there are two relays located under the ECM in the engine bay. Pain to get to, but it fixed my EPC light and starting issues. One of the relays supplies power to the ECM, the other to the fuel pump. On other models the relays are located under the steering column. Just run a search on ECM relay for your particular model. Hope this helps.....

Just sitting here with my Audi A4 2005 being towed to an auto electrician. Turn key, lights work, radio work, but no engine. Epic light is on. Auto electrician has checked it over but has no progress and no diagnosis yet so it’s going to be sitting in his garage. A bit nervous to see so many similar complaints. Worried about how much this one is going to cost as I just replaced 3 tyres in 2 weeks and had a wheel alignment and just found out my back shock absorber is blown and leaking oil too. has anyone also had an issue with leaking coolant? Mine has leaked since I’ve had it and have had mechanics try to stop the leaks several times but no luck.. it just leaks a bit slower.
I have a 2014 Audi A4. EPC light and Engine light is currently on. We replaced our cylinder coils due to the code reader from AutoZone. Still did not clear the EPC and engine light. Car is sluggish when first start, car shakes and jerks at 0-2 rpm. At 3-4 rpm car drives smooth. Then back to 2 rpm, the car jerks and shakes again. Took it to Audi dealership this morning, 6 hours later - They could not tell us what the issue is!!! Any idea ?
I have 2012 Audi Q5 and my EPC light came ON. I did not experience much throttle issue but car would not start on one Go and require to press start button more than once. I went to delearship yesterday and they said gasket seal and battery and quoted $2400 to fix this issue. I was like Wow. I said not to delearship and waiting to go to some third party foriegn car mechanic to have second look and quote again. I am also gonna call Audi and ask why this problem occured when from last 7 year all my service on time at delearship with alwayz premium fuel. I will teade in soon
2002 A4 Quattro. 2nd owner and got a crazy good deal. Within the last 2 months have replaced everything from the chain tensioner to the oil pan and everything in between. Yesterday go to start her up and check engine lights on run a scan and got code PO352. Ignition coil B primary/ secondary circuit. I replace the coils and plugs clear the code and starts up right away then looses RPMS and dies. Both the Battery light and EPC came on as she died. Everytime I start her up same thing happens. It’s a new battery new coils etc. I was confused so to narrow things down I started pulling sensors to see if it made a difference. Unplugged the MAF sensor and she started right up and doesn’t die. Further inspection led to the MAF female sensor plug Was broken inside 1 of the female pieces. Since it is Christmas all the parts stores are Closed. Tomorrow I’ll be changing the wires I’ll keep y’all posted. Did anyone else solve the issues? Curious..... thanks and LMN
i have also the issue but rpm jump t0 1100. it the engine speed sensor. i had an issue before with the engine light coming on and the camshaft sensor. with the same code for the speed sensor. the car turns but does not start. i am just waiting for the order to arrive.
My Audi is having issues with the EPC and being sluggish. Still have a years worth of payments and needless to say, I will NEVER own another German made car again.
I just bought 1 battery changed at time bought but it was dead and they tried jump starting. Battery needs to be fully charged and no jump starting. I disconnect battery for 20 mins and it fires up.
I have a 2014 Audi Q5 Technik, been about 1 year since I started to have trouble with my vehicle. When I cold start it and try to accelerate I am at loss of throttle and the vehicles shakes a lot, while the engine light start blinking. if i continue to let it shake, the engine light becomes constant. However I noticed one thing, earlier, when I used to drop off my daughter at her school bus stop, wait there for about 10-15 mins; my car never troubled me in those cases. My conclusion is after cold start, if i let it warm up for amount 10-15 mins, i never face this shaking, engine light blinking and ultimately EPC turning on issue at all.
I’m a little bit late to this party but we bought a used A4 wagon with 100k miles and honestly worst car we’ve bought. Been in the shop more than our garage. At a German Motor specialty shop that replaced all the injectors last month. (A lot more but that’s another thread) But of course it’s running fine after sitting there all week. Had to reschedule my appointment with the dealer for oil consumption issue.
have you tried to check the rpm sensor. also called a engine speed sensor. i have a audi a4 2001 1.8t same issue with the car EPC light. car felt like its was heavy. I change the sensor and now the EPC is not coming back. hope it helps you.
Thank you GuruM3G6T. Im not good at these kind of tech stuff. I will try to find out how to check the engine speed sensor.

I have the same issue Audi A4 1.8T 2005. EPc light suddenly came on. checked all the fuses under the ECU all OK. Checked all the light bulbs all OK. Brake lights don't come on so maybe it could be the brake switch? any ideas anyone.
