Question type: Car Customization

My top motor is giving up the ghost - rather than replace it, can it just be
disconnected and the top put up and down manually?

I wouldn't think that would be a problem. Although the motor/linkage may also help to hold it in the down position so that the wind doesn't try lifting it up. I'm not sure if there is any other type of latching feature in the down position.
