Replaced battery now car wont move

My car was having starting issues out of the blue,
came out from am hour long appointment find it
wouldn't start (made a ratcheting noise). Would
only start with a jump until we replaced the battery.
After we replaced the battery it starts fine but
when we went to leave it now will not move. When
shifting gears it indicates it is shifting but I don't
feel or hear the gears engage. Any ideas?

is the gear selector sloppy ? can you see if the linkages are moving without getting under the vehicle ?
