Brenda, good evening, the CEL,or check engine lamp is there to let you know that a system in your car is not operating quite right. The on board diagnostics can only be accessed with a scan tool. The numbers or trouble codes are just pointers as to where to start a diagnosis, the codes are too numerous to even begin to suggest where to start a proper diagnosis.Once the code is pulled now the job of interpreting what that code means begins. You should find a shop that has a good reputation and has up to date equipment ,with knowledgable staff.Depending on what the code is the repairs could be anything from 100 to several thousand dollars, not trying to scare you ,but this is the reality of modern car ownership.Good luck to you and I hope that this takes a little of the mystery out of this.Oh and by the way if the CEL is on and flashing, you need to stop driving the car because flashing is an indication of a catalyst damaging problem ,which can get very expensive, here's to hoping for a minor repair for you.

My advice is to take it to your local Autozone. They can scan the computer codes and give you general suggestions about what's probably wrong.

Brenda, did you get your car running? We never saw a solution posted. Even though there are hundreds of reasons for the cel to illuminate and no way for any of us to answer your question, please post your solution. Forums are worthless without solutions and contribution by people with problems.
