Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I just recently bought a 2006 dodge
charger with the 5.7 hemi engine. There a
sound in the engine that I didn't hear while
test driving the car. I heard that hemis have
a ticking sound mostly at idling. My makes
a ticking sound when idling but it makes a
loud clicking sound while driving which to
me sounds like a beat up Honda civic or
something that has a 4 banger engine
instead of a v8. The car only has 73000 on
it. my question is am I screwed? If not what
the cause and how much it cost to fix it?

Hello, I suggest that you have the engine diagnosed. This tick could be the single push rod could be faulty or a piston failure. Both a major damage theme. If you have a third party warranty, They will not pay if their rules are not followed. And you need to call them and find out what the rules are. Do not assume the reasonable thing to do is their correct way to proceed with a problem. Believe me, I learned the hard way. If you do have a third party warranty get on the phone now and ask any question of every situation you could think of for what will be covered. Serous Point: Know what a Break Down MEANS! Do not rely on Dealer or manufacturer steps to follow. So, again have it checked. Be proactive, or you may eat the repair cost. Anywhere from $1000 to $9000. That is the way my issue started. Final cost, out of pocket $8.053 or another car to buy. It was a Hemi as well. Warranty co refused to pay. The Reason is What a break down means to them only. The problem found to have been in vehicle when we purchased it. Do not wait for any maintenance issues to escalate. FYI: Just because your car is running now does not mean there is nothing to worry about. GET IT CHECKED. Caveat emptor.

First i would like to ask, how long you have you had the car?And Chasyn,is right, have it checked now,not later, win there is a hole in that hemi block, from a loose rod.

I think it been about three weeks. Yeah I thought so about having it checked and it didn't come with a warranty cause of it age so whatever it going to cost will come out of pocket. Damn dealer I thought buying the car at a big dealer would be safer than those Crap holes dealership

I bought my Challenger brand new last year, and when I was test diving it I was thinking this thing has a lot valve train noise. But I love the car and have been wanting one for many years, so I bought it anyways, and figured it was just some bad gas the dealer put in or that's just how these new hemis sound. It almost sounds like a lifter tick of some sort put the car will run its ass off and doesn't miss a beat, but there's always this thought in my head wondering what the hell, why does this thing tick like that. I've built many a engine, Chevy engines that is, and none of them have ever had this noise unless I was running a solid lifter cam, and even then those cams were quieter than the hemi in my car.

I have a dodge charger rt 2012 with 34k miles start to make a big weird noise the dealer tried to give me up three times and at the final they opened my engine replace the lifters and camshaft to try to stop my engine noise and now my car is a big shit. The arrigo wpb made a amateur job and i start to a fight with dodge because they did a shit job and now my car is making more noise also making a new noise when i put in drive position and factory warranty is a fake warranty because the dodge machanics does not know how to fix my car for two times and i start to think to sell it and buy a mustang again.

My hemi in my 06 ram 1500 ticked for the longest, I simply changed the spark plugs, I put Bosch platinum preset plugs in the engine, low and behold started the engine the tick was gone! I thick the tick is some type of misfire in the cylinders. Good luck!

My 04 ram has been ticking for about 8 yrs . Has 175k miles on it . As the engine heats it gets quieter . I'm amazed that outta all the forums and chats I've only seen one person mention the exhaust . And it was on here . I guess it's been a long time since people have had to put a new donut or tighten there exhaust . As long as it ain't knocking I'll keep on rocking !

I have a 2008 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi. It had the tick really bad, and seemed to get worse almost everyday. The dealer replaced an exhaust manifold gasket, and 2 bolts. The tick got quieter, but never completely gone. I brought it to the dealer 2 more times for ticking noise, but was told nothing is wrong with it, and that the tick is normal. Today I replaced all 16 spark plugs, and noticed over half of them were loose, meaning I could loosen them by hand. After I replaced all the plugs, and torqued them down by hand tightening them, then giving them about another 1/4 turn, I'm happy to say the tick is gone. I couldn't believe it. I'm so happy now. Hopefully, some of you just have this issue, and not something more serious.

have them check the roller rockers on the camshafts ---that's what was wrong on my sons 3.6 v6 --understand Chrysler has had a problem with these for years but dealers pass them off as something else then after warranty is over --[well guess what we figured it out --its going to cost you $$$$.

I just bought a 2018 Ram 1500 in December. My truck started ticking about a month ago. It starts ticking about 2 mins into warming up. The dealer told me its normal. Im calling BS. I have been researching for 3 days now. It seems to be a problem that has been going on for way to long. But i can't figure out if mine is exhaust manifold bolts or a lifter problem

If it goes away after heating up, it's most likely broken exhaust manifold bolts. Mine was always ticking even after the dealer replaced my broken bolts. Ended up being loose spark plugs.

Hello, I have owned an 06 5.7 for 3 or so years now. I can tell you this is normal. I have had two engines in mine, the second one installed myself. I hear this as well, both engines. First engine had over 130k or so on it. Second one is on maybe 5k. Ticking exists hot, not sure if it's there when it's cold. I do need to replace my Cats pretty soon though. As the person above me suggested (spark plugs) I'd have to check mine but I doubt mine are loose.

I'm trying to figure out if the tick everyone talks about is only present for a few seconds during cold starts and then it goes away for the most part ??? OR are we speaking of a constant tapping tick noise that is present during idle at all temperatures?? MY 2006 Ram Hemi. I bought it new . Current mileage is 75k. It has always had a slight tick at idle at all temps. BUT Just recently i have a cold start tick lasting 4 - 5 seconds upon cold start . I swear this started immediate after last oil & filter change. I always use full synth 5w-20 of whatever is on sale with wix filter. ANY THOUGHTS- COMMENTS ARE WELCOME.

I have a Dodge Charger RT 2014 with 150k miles. I started ticking very loud at 145k miles. I changed it oil and treated it with sea foam and Lucas oil additive. The tick went away for about a week and came back. I then did a double oil change by adding on bottle of marvel mistery oil to 5 quarts of synthetic oil , drove it for 10 miles and drained the oil; Finally I changed the oil and put six quarts of synthetic oil. Its been three weeks and the lifters are silent.

Have the 5.7 hemi in a Ram 1500 started making the ticking noise at 49k miles took it to the local dealer here in Mobile Al right away service advisor told me its the exhaust manifold bolts and that he had someone experienced in doing it dropped in am they had it fixxed by the afternoon and they even covered it under warranty with no cost to me guess im lucky to have such a good dealership here.

Broken exhaust manifold bolts is usually the problem.hemi's are notorious for this tick noise

I had my Ram 1500 Hemi tick repaired for $3000. A Dodge rep assisted in the repair of the heads. The truck has more power and gets better gas mileage. The only thing the tick was make me wonder if I want another Dodge with a Hemi. Powerful engine, but I don't want to pay another $3000 to fix the problem Dodge can and should repair at the factory.
