2012 Town and Country P0016

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had this code (P0016) which says my crank shaft and rear
camshaft (1A not sure if that is for intake or exhaust) are out of
sync. The idle was rough and I noticed the tachometer
wavered up and down by about 40 rpms when it used to be
rock steady. I put in a new crank sensor and a new bank1 cam
sensor. That did not help at all. I replaced the timing set (new
gears, chains, guides, and tensioners---a really involved job).
That solved the problem for about a week. Then it came back. I
inspected the flex plate for cracks and could not see any
through the little inspection plate hole. I rotated the engine
clockwise with a ratchet torque wrench on the harmonic
balancer bolt while watching the flex plate so i could see all the
way around it. Saw nothing but did hear an odd clunk as i
rotated the engine around.  I rotated it a couple more times by
hand and never heard the clunk again. But next time i started it
up i got new codes.  In addition to the earlier p0016, now i got
also a p0017 and a p000b and p0300. The p0300 if random
misfires on varies cylinders. Yes, i could hear them now and
they had not been there before. The p0017 is crank and
camshaft on bank 2 are not in sync. And the p000b is camshaft
position slow response.  Wow! Feel like i probably need a
scanner to watch the signals and get a better idea of what is
happening. But also I'm sure somebody else has been through
this and can tell me what it is... ha ha ha ha.  Well, I hope so, at
any rate. Now the van will not start sometimes.

Ok. Not good. I pulled the timing cover back off and found that the timing chain for bank 1 had slipped teeth on the exhaust cam ONLY. The other 3 cams were still aligned correctly. I found my new timing chain for bank one had stretched significantly. I pulled the exhaust camshaft and found it showed signs of significant wear on the frontmost lobe for cylinder 1. I suspected I would have a bunch of bent valves so I pulled the head. A real head scratcher. All of the valves looked fine but i took out the valve that correlated to the worn cam lobe. Nothing amiss....looks completely fine. Completely uniform and true. So what would cause the cam lobe to wear if the valve is good? Seems it could only be lack of oil. So this is where I am stuck right now. I want to make sure there is nothing hampering oil delivery to that lifter/lobe/valve guide area somehow. Getting that valve spring back on is going to be a real booger!

Ok. All good now...I think. We got her on the road and made a 200 mile trip with no problems. How did i fix it? I still had the old timing chains and put them back on. For bank1 i put on a new tensioner. The worn camshaft was not badly worn could not see or feel a ridge so I just used it. Got new headgasket and new head bolts. torqued it all down and reassembled everything. In fact, that makes it sound a whole lot easier than it is. used RTV to put timing chain cover and oil pan back on. She fired up first time. I erased all the codes and everything seems good now. I notice a slight an only occasional unevenness in the idle...i'm looking into that but am not really worried about it. She gets 25mpg on the highway at 75mph. Almost like new....so I'm happy. Just an FYI... you do NOT have to remove the alternator, airconditioner compressor or powersteering pump to pull the timing chain cover. But you DO have to pull the lower oil pan.

Update. Arghhhh! The P0016 is still here....or perhaps just came back. It is difficult to know if you actually got rid of it since it take 2 drive cycles to set it. And now the gas mileage has dropped and sometimes get random misfire codes. But with all that, it still runs dependably. I'm not worried to take it on a trip. Though it is probably going to mess up the catalytic converter driving it like this. Does anybody know if there is a code for same problem on bank 2? P0016 is crankshaft camshaft bank 1 correlation problem...does that mean the bank 2 is ok?

Ok....answered my own question earlier. Dont get old...it is amazing how quickly you can forget something. Ok if both banks think the crank is out of sync....then more likely it truly is. But since i know for a fact that it is not...that points to a crank shaft sensor problem. But it is new...so either it is an electrical issue or the flex plate could have slipped. Guess that is my next project. Will have to pull the transmission to get a really good look at the flex plate. Double Rats!

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to say thank you for all the info. A friend of mine's van just popped up the p0016 code. We haven't started working on it yet, so when I googled it your thread came up. Thanks again! I hope everything worked out ok in the end
