1999 Z3 starter

my 1999 Z3 2.8 starter clicks when i turn the key.  
when i try again the engine starts.  what's the problem?

Check for switched power on small wire at the starter solenoid. If you have power and it just clicks the solenoid is faulty. The solenoid is used to switch high amperage to the starter motor. The solenoid is usually replaced as part of the starter.
