2012 Mini Cooper Convertible with approx. 33K miles
I've been told by a local BMW dealer they found metal shavings in the lower
part of the motor requiring a motor replacement.If so what would the best
estimate cost?

Isn't that covered by your power train warranty? There was a recall on those for a failure of the timing chain tensioner. Google it. Somebody ain't telling you the whole story. Call another dealer. Engine replacements run about $5000 for engine and labor....8-12 hours labor.
